The third section of our ceiling has been torn down and is now being reconstructed. The good news is that the masonry of this part of the ceiling is in good shape so we don’t have to replace or fix it (as we did in the past). Right now the frames that create the arches of the ceiling are being put up (above) and you can see the shape of the arches to come. When they are all in place, craftsmen will begin to fill in the space between them, creating a tight crosshatch of narrow strips of wood. Here is how that looked during reconstruction of different section of ceiling in 2023:

After that is done, several layers of plaster are laid on the fretwork to create the ceiling arches and then painted, as you can see from our previous repairs below:

Unfortunately, the state foundations that had supported our restoration work in the past were unable to provide all the funds needed for this last round of reconstruction and repair. We have a shortfall of 35,000 euros!

If we can’t raise all the necessary funds now, we will have to stop the process at the stage of the fretwork and cover it as best as possible to keep the heat from rising and disappearing out the roof — and to keep the rain and snow from seeping down, damaging the fretwork and dripping into the nave.

We would only be able to do the plaster work and painting when we raise the necessary funds, and the work could only be completed in warm weather.
